You can see them here in iTunes:

Full version vocabulary trainer as download

We already offer German speakers our mp3 vocabulary trainer as a download. In the compact version they can download over 10.000 mp3 words and phrases for less than 20 Euros, that’s more than 500 mp3s for less than 1 Euro (most language audio-CDs don’t offer more than this for ten times the price and without the ability to see what you’re hearing, create playlists etc). At the end of January, all English speakers who want to learn German, will also be able to download our full versions, spoken in German and English.

Our definitions

In contrast to most vocabulary audio CDs, we record the most common definitions for a particular word. For example, in the case of albern: you hear the word “albern”, a short delay during which you can think which definitions are right, and then you hear the three most common English definitions: “silly, foolish, stupid.” Of course you can see all the text on your iPod display.

In the case of English – German an example is: affectionate – liebevoll, herzlich.

The multiple definitions in our mp3 vocabulary trainer means that translations don’t get oversimplified as with conventional Audio-CD language guides, but it remains easy to understand, especially since you can see the words on your display.

Podcast abbreviations

Almost all our definitions are short enough to appear on an iPod Mini Display. To keep them short we use the following abbreviations only where necessary (but of course you hear everything spoken as usual):

In the German:
  • v. von
  • h. heit (Gesundheit = Gesundh.)
  • k. keit (Eitelkeit = Eitelk.)
  • g. ung (Achtung = Achtg. Baby)
  • l. lich (Wahrscheinlich = Wahscheinl.)
  • etw etwas (possibly et.)
  • s. sich, sein (s. for sich in the case of recessive verbs)
  • j-n jemanden
  • j-m jemandem
  • j-d jemand
  • e. ein,eine(r,s)
  • u. und
  • o. oder

In the English:
  • os oneself
  • so. someone
  • sb somebody
  • sth something
Make a playlist

When you listen to podcasts with your iPod, you can’t listen continuously. This is especially irritating with our vocabulary podcasts. You can avoid this problem by copying all our podcasts into a playlist. You can even use an intelligent playlist so that the copying happens automatically. Then you can listen to the words one after another, randomly what ever you want.

Where are the definitions?

iTunes overwrites our definitions in the Artist tag with the podcast date. As a result, you need to press your click wheel button twice while hearing in order to see the definitions. Of course you hear them, so you only need to do that when you are unsure how the definitions are spelled.

The trick with our vocabulary trainer is that we save all the definitions in the id3 tags. iPod minis and other mp3 players including the Sony PSP need to have the definitions “tagged” at artist. So that’s where we’ve put them for our podcast. All other iPods (normal, Photo, Video, Nano) can show the Album tag on the display. In our downloadable full version, it’s beneficial to get this version, because the definitions don’t cause any confusion with your music tags. You can find every album in your iPod through a slight detour:

Normally: iPod>>Music>>Albums>>select album
With our vocabulary trainer: iPod>>Music>>Artists>>select album

That’s great news because it means you can use your iPod just as you always have for music, but you can use it as well to learn and improve a language or as a personal translator on your travels!

Separate your music from our words

So that you can listen randomly across your playlists to music or you find specific songs quickly, it’s helpful if you create a master playlist of all your music or of everything in your iPod but your vocabulary mp3s. It’s easy, you just need to set up an intelligent playlist with a criteria that selects all files that are longer than 15 seconds and of course select which playlists to copy them from. Then you have everything on your iPod except our mp3s. And you can listen to your music without hearing random words in German and English.
